Who We Help

Three Audiences. One Coordinated Process.

Postmortem DNA testing is requested for a narrow set of circumstances. In each of them the stakes are high and the process requires careful coordination.

01

Families

Biological confirmation for personal knowledge, inheritance purposes, or to establish paternity of a child when the alleged father has passed away. We handle the process with the sensitivity and privacy the situation requires.

02

Estate & Probate Attorneys

Legally admissible biological confirmation for inheritance disputes, estate claims, and probate proceedings. Chain-of-custody documentation and results in a format your case requires.

03

Funeral Homes & Coroner Offices

When a family or attorney requests DNA testing through your facility, we coordinate the process directly with you — arriving at a scheduled time, collecting approved samples, and managing everything from there.

Accepted Samples

What Biological Material Is Accepted.

Postmortem DNA analysis requires appropriate biological material. The type and condition of available samples affects both the viability of testing and the reliability of results.

Contact us before ruling out a case. We will assess what is available and advise honestly on whether testing is viable — before any collection is attempted and before any commitment is made.

In cases where the coroner's office has been involved, a blood card or other specimen may already be on file. A specimen release fee is payable directly to the coroner's office — fees vary by county and state. We coordinate the release process as part of our service.

Act quickly. Sample availability and viability decreases over time after death. If postmortem DNA testing is being considered, contact us as soon as possible. Early contact gives us the best chance of a successful collection.

Sample Types

Accepted for Testing.

Dried Blood Spots / Blood Cards
The most reliable sample type for postmortem DNA analysis. If available, this is the preferred collection method.
Tissue Samples
Frozen or preserved tissue samples collected by the coroner or medical examiner. Viability depends on preservation conditions.
Buccal Swabs
When available prior to preparation at the funeral facility. Timing is critical — contact us immediately if this option may be available.
Other Biological Material
Evaluated on a case by case basis. Contact us to discuss what is available — we will advise on viability before any collection is attempted.
The Process

How Postmortem Testing Is Coordinated.

From your first call to results delivery — every step is managed by our team so families and facilities do not have to navigate the process themselves.

01

Initial Consultation

Contact us by phone. We discuss the case, confirm what samples may be available, and determine whether testing is viable — before any commitment is made. This conversation is completely confidential.

02

Authorization Confirmed

We confirm that authorization has been provided by the legal next of kin or an authorized estate representative. An attorney managing the estate may also initiate the process with appropriate documentation.

03

Facility Coordination

We contact the funeral home, coroner's office, or receiving facility directly to arrange access and confirm timing. In cases where specimens are held by a coroner's office, a specimen release fee is payable directly to the coroner — fees vary by county and state. We guide you through that process. The family or attorney does not need to manage any of this coordination.

04

Coordinated Collection

Collection is coordinated directly with the funeral facility or coroner's office. All samples are collected or retrieved by qualified facility staff following strict chain-of-custody procedures. All documentation is completed at the time of collection.

05

Laboratory Processing

Samples are transported securely to our AABB-accredited laboratory partner. Postmortem cases receive specialized handling appropriate to the sample type. Standard turnaround is 10–15 business days from sample receipt.

06

Results Delivery

Results are delivered to the requesting party — family member, attorney, or estate representative — within the stated turnaround window. Results are never released by phone.

Important Notice
About Sample Viability
Postmortem testing results depend entirely on sample viability — the condition and availability of biological material at the time of collection. In some cases, additional samples may be required if initial samples do not yield sufficient DNA. Additional fees apply if further collection is needed. We will assess viability honestly before any collection is attempted and communicate clearly before any additional charges are processed.

Questions & Answers

Postmortem DNA Testing — FAQ.

How soon after death should testing be started?
As soon as possible. Sample viability decreases over time and certain sample types are only available within a specific window following death. In many cases, the coroner's office will have a blood card on file if they came in contact with the body — a specimen release fee applies, varying by county and state. Contact us immediately and we will advise on timing, what may be available, and how to proceed.
Can testing still be done after burial?
In some cases, yes — depending on sample availability and burial conditions. Contact us to discuss the specifics. We will give you an honest assessment of what is viable before any process is initiated.
Who can authorize postmortem DNA testing?
Authorization must come from the legal next of kin or an authorized estate representative. An attorney managing the estate may also initiate the process with appropriate documentation. For coroner-held specimens, the family must authorize release directly with the coroner's office — fees vary by county and state. We guide you through that process.
Are results admissible in probate or estate proceedings?
Yes. All postmortem results follow strict chain-of-custody protocols and are processed through an AABB-accredited laboratory. Results are accepted in estate, probate, family law, and federal proceedings in California and Nevada.
What if no buccal swab was collected before preparation?
We accept blood cards, tissue samples, and other biological material. Contact us with what is available and we will advise on whether testing is viable and how to proceed. Do not rule out a case without speaking to us first.
Can you test a relative of the deceased instead?
In some cases, relationship testing through a biological relative — such as a parent or sibling — can provide comparable information when direct samples from the deceased are not available. Contact us to discuss your specific situation.
What happens if results are inconclusive?
If initial samples do not yield sufficient DNA for a conclusive result, additional samples may be required. Additional fees apply in this situation. We communicate clearly before any additional collection or charges are processed.
How is the family kept informed throughout the process?
We communicate directly with the requesting party — family member, attorney, or estate representative — at each stage of the process. Your funeral home or facility is not placed in the position of relaying information or managing expectations.
